Ten ways to help you manage the home load

In response to my before 5.00am  post a few weeks ago, Ayobami had some comments about not sleeping early no matter how she tried.

Half the time, we get mentally worked up trying to choose what’s for dinner or what the kids would take to school

To be frank, I still haven’t gotten it right, but F.J told me one time ‘we are all on a journey to the bakery, I can only point the way’.

So, I don’t have 100% tested and trusted solutions, but I can say these make a difference.

1. Thrash the phone!

Not like literal dustbin o, but really, pick a time and keep your phone away from you. If you like to pretend that you need it close to you for alarm or when the light goes off, then switch off the mobile data.

To be frank, I still haven’t gotten  right, but F.J told me one time ‘we are all on a journey to the bakery, I can only point the way

We tend to keep scrolling and scrolling on our various social media and before you know it, It’s 1.00am

P:s: If anyone calls me out on my IG after dark activities, I will delete your comment o, ehen

2. Cook for the week (reasonably)

Half the time, we get mentally worked up trying to choose what’s for dinner or what the kids would take to school the next morning. Some people cook ahead and store in the freezer, atink they have a brother in Nepa.

my sister, you do not boast with sufferhead

If like me, none, cook stuff that can be preserved in a short time via warming.

 3. Don’t party all weekend

When you attend all those saturday weddings and Sunday baby dedications, remember to get back home early. If you can avoid it, don’t party on both days. Pick one, if you are like me and the second one is after 5th roundabout lekki, your excuse is legit. You cannot come and kill yourself and be journeying to owambe.

4. Take help when it is offered

My friend Cynthia gave me a friendly advice when I was doing superwoman “my sister, you do not boast with sufferhead”

If someone offers to help you with even the slightest thing, don’t be quick to say ‘no thank you’. Give them jara work sef.

5. Get into bed

This looks easy right? Not really. But try and remember boarding school lights out. Be strict with yourself, lights out should mean lights out. Don’t say ‘Oh let me just finish up these dishes or laundry’. Go to bed and tuck yourself in at the same time daily.

They make you feel you aren’t good enough and these adds up to your mental stress

6. Avoid perfectionist friends/discussions

You know them. Those friends who visit and see two unwashed dishes and try to talk to you about being cleaner. You can’t really tell them to shut and get out sha, it’s not nice.

The ones who will come in and comment rudely about your children running around in only pants, or lego in your parlor

Steer away from the conversation. They make you feel you aren’t good enough and these adds up to your mental stress. You find yourself unconsciously trying to meet up with unrealistic ideas of neatness. Now, I’m not excusing tardiness, but if you have ever had three children under three, under four, even under five, you understand the handful.

7. Set the alarm with enough snooze, then don’t snooze

No mom has it all rosy and perfect, but some sure have a way of making the whole motherhood thing look like bread and butter

Yep, snooze basically is like ‘oh I’m awake, but let me sleep small’. Avoid this temptation, but understandly habits take time to form. So snooze a couple of times  but you really should get used to getting up at once.

8. Set a timetable

Remember secondary school? Yep, wake up and schedule your day daily. Looking at your set objectives in black and white and ticking them off gives you a huge sense of fulfilment. This helps you fight that wallowing feeling of ‘i’m not doing enough’

9. Talk!

Share your challenges with other moms, I’ve collected priceless treasures in this manner. No mom has it all rosy and perfect, but some sure have a way of making the whole motherhood thing look like bread and butter. Cast out every spirit of pride or shame in you and ask her how she does it. Take mental notes while at it.

10. Don’t be dismayed

Rather cliche, but really, not getting it right today doesn’t mean you can’t get it right soon.

Give yourself time. Remember this is a journey, don’t get lost, enjoy every step of the way.

Olisatv also had a brief chat with a few of us, so if you want to do amebo and get tiny clues of what I’m up to for the year,  read up here

Cheers to a restful weekend,

  1. Your points are really on point . . . but another ill master is procrastination. when you schedule or set timetable, you should try by all means to adhere to it.
I like this part of setting alarm, when you said ” Yep, snooze basically is like ‘oh I’m awake, but let me sleep small’. Avoid this temptation, but understandly habits take time to form. So snooze a couple of times but you really should get used to getting up at once.”. It is really a temptation that must be oovercomed.

  2. I did amebo🙈
Good points all round, as a working mum of 3 under 5, its easy to geyt all stressed up trying to be perfect. I do some of your points above and hopefully incorporate all others.
I must add another though – lets all encourage dads to get involved too. ( it could be getting the kids ready for bed or getting them ready for school – if possible both and more)

    Love ur write ups
